Job Description 

The Praxis Rail team have a distinguished list of Rail clients with a number of interesting and challenging projects currently ongoing. We are now looking for a highly experienced UK Railway Signalling Consultant to join our specialist team. The ideal candidate would need to have a strong signalling background, experience as a Signalling Designer would be also be an added advantage as would axle counter knowledge, general rail consulting, safety or requirements engineering expertise.

Job Role
The Railway Signalling Consultant will provide railway signalling competence into independent safety assessment, Notified Body assignments and railway systems consultancy. The role will include:

  • Supporting railway systems engineering assignments; for example designing a system-level re-signalling scheme.
  • Supporting Notified Body assignments with signalling expertise.
  • Supporting independent safety assessment assignments with signalling expertise; eg assessing a defined re-signalling scheme for risks (safety, technical and performance).
  • Carrying out Notified Body assessments in the command, control and signalling domain of European rail applications.
  • Contributing to technical content, for sales proposals.
  • Being an active member of the Praxis railway community, sharing best-practice and contributing to Praxis' capabilities in this area.
  • Acting as an advocate for Praxis within the national and international railway communities, by speaking at conferences, attending standards committees, etc.
  • Contributing to technical strategy for large and complex sales proposals and/or projects.
  • Providing training and mentoring to less experienced staff.
  • Contributing to direction for Praxis' railway offering consistent with that of Praxis' overall engineering strategy.

Education and training

  • A first class or upper second degree in a relevant engineering discipline - or significant industrial experience.
  • A further degree (eg MSc, or PhD) would not be an unusual qualification for a candidate.
  • Consistent in-service training demonstrating a professional approach to maintenance of skills.
  • Membership of the Institute of Railway Signalling Engineers.

Experience

  • Candidates should possess 10+ years experience of railway signalling, with at least two years of experience at the signalling systems level (including complex re-signalling schemes).
  • Experience with both main line and metro systems.
  • Experience of safety assessment in the signalling domain is of particular interest.

Skills

  • The candidate will want to build on detailed knowledge attained through their signalling career to contribute to safety on main line and metro railway systems.
  • Knowledge of scheme design and development, detailed design and/or data preparation.
  • Broad knowledge of signalling systems and applications within these environments eg various interlocking and trackside equipment types, knowledge of UNISIG supplier equipment will be useful.
  • Knowledge of ERTMS, systems, their development, and their application.
  • Knowledge of ATO and ATP systems and application.
  • Cross-discipline understanding of all areas interfacing with signalling, eg EMC, human factors, power, etc.
  • An ability to think analytically, rigorously and creatively.
  • Staff are likely to be highly customer-focussed and have effective oral and written communications skills to a range of technical and commercial audiences.
  • An understanding of the technical and commercial issues associated with delivery of complex systems.
  • An ability to carry out detailed justified work to commercial and technical requirements, and to be able to constructively criticise and assess others' work.
  • Knowledge of industry-standard tools and techniques, and a critical appreciation of their strengths and weaknesses.
  • The ability and personal drive to work in teams or alone, with client and Praxis staff, both in Praxis offices and on-site in the UK and potentially overseas.
  • The ability to mentor and develop others.
