Job Description 

Praxis delivers leading-edge systems engineering solutions to clients in the critical systems markets. The defence sector is a growing area of our business where we offer our traditional systems engineering and safety skills, as well as NEC skills. We are now looking for two dynamic and committed systems engineers with NEC domain experience to join our expanding team.

Job Role
The role will cover all aspects of the systems life cycle, and subject to competency and experience could include any or all of the following: Identification of system requirements.

  • Generation of systems design or evaluation thereof.
  • Conduct of systems feasibility studies.
  • Determination or evaluation of integration strategy for large-scale systems.
  • Determination or evaluation of validation strategy for large-scale systems.
  • Identification and/or introduction of governance systems to meet business objectives.
  • Assessment of existing enterprise architectures, or identification of new architectures, to meet business level requirements.
  • Contributing to technical content, for sales proposals.
  • Being an active member of the Praxis systems community, sharing best practice and contributing to Praxis' capabilities in this area.
For more experienced candidates the following duties and responsibilities could also apply:
  • Acting as an advocate for Praxis within the national and international systems communities, by speaking at conferences, attending standards committees, etc.
  • Setting technical strategy for large and complex sales proposals and/or projects.
  • Providing training and mentoring to less experienced staff.
  • Setting direction for Praxis' systems engineering offering and ensuring consistency with Praxis' overall engineering strategy.

Education and training

  • A first class or upper second degree in a relevant engineering discipline - or significant industrial experience. Relevant engineering disciplines could include systems engineering, maths, physics, software engineering - the first degree is likely to be numerate and scientific.
  • Training and development is likely to reflect a multi-disciplinary background and for more experience candidates experience at a variety of different levels within a business.
  • A further degree (eg MSc, or PhD) would not be an unusual qualification for a candidate.
  • Consistent in-service training demonstrating a professional approach to maintenance of skills.
  • At the very least a clearly defined route through to chartered status, and for more experienced candidates membership of a relevant professional institution with chartered status.

Experience

  • Candidates are likely to have at least five years working in a relevant discipline or industry sector - either directly within industry, or an academic or consulting environment.
  • More experienced candidates are likely to have at least ten years relevant experience and are likely to be known within the critical systems arena as a recognised expert. Relevant sectors are civil and military aerospace, air traffic management, nuclear, mainline and underground rail.

Skills

  • A sound appreciation of the underlying principles of systems engineering in a complex systems environment, including one or more of corporate governance, enterprise architecture, systems of systems, requirements engineering, systems design, systems integration or systems validation.
  • Understanding of the broad range of systems engineering, possibly by demonstrable expertise in areas ranging from whole life-cycle enterprise level business-issues down to IT systems.
  • An understanding of the issues associated with delivery of complex systems.
  • An ability to think analytically, rigorously and creatively.
  • Staff are likely to be highly customer-focussed and have effective oral and written communications skills to a range of technical and commercial audiences. More experienced candidates are likely to have highly developed influencing skills.
  • An ability to carry out detailed justified work to commercial and technical requirements, and to be able to constructively criticise and assess others' work.
  • Knowledge of industry-standard tools and techniques, and a critical appreciation of their strengths and weaknesses; for example process engineering notations, modelling tools such as UML, IDEF, SSF, MODAF, DODAF, etc.
  • The ability and personal drive to work in teams or alone, with client and Praxis staff, both in Praxis offices and on-site in the UK and potentially overseas.
  • Working knowledge of one or more regulatory regimes and the national/international standards appropriate to that regime.
  • The ability to mentor and develop others.
  • The ability to plan and deliver in a complex environment.
